Injecting Innovation Into Your Daily Practice

In 2019, almost every human need or desire has a solution. Want to know the name of a song you heard in a club? There’s an app for that. Want to meet a hot single nearby? There’s an app for that. Want to try out a new makeup line without buying expensive products or putting the who-knows-where-that’s-been trial brush on your face? There’s an app for that.

Answering needs isn’t innovative anymore—it’s expected. Today’s brands need to take things to another level of innovation if they want to keep their clientele happy. It isn’t about what you solve for your users, but how you solve it and what kind of experience you’re creating for them.

In order to do this, you’ll need a bright, refreshed, creative-minded and solutions-centered team that’s going to help your brand innovate, every single day. So how can you inject innovation into your brand’s day-to-day? Here are our top two tips for getting in the creative mindset:

Create Something Every Day

Maybe this sounds cheesy or obvious, but to innovate, you’ve got to put your creative hat on, and the best way to get creative is to create something. Not everyone is a Davinci or Mozart, we know. The point isn’t to create something amazing, but to get into the habit of creating something in the first place. It’s even better if you’re pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone.

If you and your staff members could create something unique each day, your creative block will give way to the juices needed to fuel your innovative engine. Try:

  • Writing a (judgment-free) short story
  • Playing a game of paper telephone with your team to start the day
  • Free journaling daily, and encouraging doodling and writing without judgment

Starting your day creatively is the best way to get your brains humming on an innovative wavelength. These are fun ways to give you and your team creative confidence.

Prioritize Communication and Delegation

On top of being open-minded to all ideas, it’s important for your team to have a process for implementing your ideas.

Have you ever been to that meeting where everyone is throwing out awesome ideas, everyone loves and agrees with them all, and then none of them come to fruition?

That’s a clear lack of communication and organization. Even if you have a horizontal organization rather than top-down leadership, it’s important to figure out who is taking care of what steps and who is going to keep track of what. Otherwise, your plans may never be followed through.

Write minutes for each meeting, and make sure to note:

  • Who is doing what to get the ideas implemented
  • In how much time, and
  • When they should report back with the next steps.

This will keep the innovative momentum going.

Create Every Day
